Teenager Mixed Stitch Crochet Blanket

Having made a colourful mixed stitch blanket, one was requested that would suit a teenage boy.  Cool colours.

Again, a lot of fun to do, and another ‘stuffed crust’ edging to hide all the ends.

To make the border/edging, I picked up stitches all around the blanket on one side, crocheted about 8 or 10 rows of single crochet into the back stitch of the previous row.

Then picked up stitches all around again, on the other side of the leftover ends, crocheted a couple of rows as above, then folded the longer one over, with all the hanging ends stuffed inside, and crocheted the two parts together with a slip stitch so it looked like the other stitches.  This created an invisible join in the border.  No sewing at all (except for the ends of the border).  The top and bottom are a little less puffy or stuffed, as they didn’t have any ends in them to be in the middle, but overall this is not noticeable.

The recipient is very happy with it.

  1. Looks fab ..I am making a multi- coloured blanket very similar to this pattern..how did you find doing this ‘stuffed crust’ edging ? My pattern also suggests this but i have always sewed my ends in before and was a bit concerned that it may not be as effective

    1. Thanks! My long standing dislike of sewing in ends led me to jump on this idea with enthusiasm, I was determined to make it work to avoid the sewing. As long as the stitch you use to create the stuffed edge is pretty tight i.e. no holes in it, I have had no problems with ends poking out or anything coming undone. I like that it makes the edging bulky in a 3D kind of way rather than being flat, but I guess this is personal preference. Picking up the stitches evenly on both sides is a bit tricky, but on the second side I used the first side as the ‘post’ to hook around so it was (mostly) even. Good luck if you try it!

      1. Thank you..I too dislike sewing in the ends and goodness there are so many ends on such a large and colourful blanket. I really like the effect it has created on your blanket,it looks substantial and finishes it off very well. Great to get feedback 🙂
