I was invited to yarnbomb a bicycle. It will form part of a street enhancement project. Some in the household were greatly amused to see a bike delivered to me… Fortunately no riding was required.
Here are some photos of the process. First, the bike, taking up space on the dining room table. (It was pressure washed clean first), then some colours artfully arranged around it and a test bar sewn on.
Then the bike was deconstructed and bits were laying around the house waiting to be covered. Even more artful colour layouts.
Then the wheels were done. The first wheel is done in the Frank O’Randle pattern ‘Rings of Change’, and the second (purple) one is the beginning of Sophies Garden/Dream/Universe. Both available free. They are double sided so there were two (almost) matching mandalas for each wheel.
Then came the rest of the bike in graduating colours from green to red. I did each strut/piece in a single colour, and varied the crochet stitches, mostly for my own amusement. I learned a couple of new ones along the way – yay.
Then came the energy. Did I mention the theme was ‘Energy’? So I crocheted tubes of yellow and threaded solar lights through them. Getting them on was fun and involved a giant BBQ skewer and a lot of patience. Originally I was going to cover a basket on the front and have the solar charger in that, with some kind of yellow flame things, but I bailed on this and ended up attaching the charger like a front light in it’s own crocheted cover.
Then the sparks. Pom poms. Many, many pom poms. I don’t want to see a pom pom for a long time. The haircut catching tray was mostly successful, until I trod on the edge and tipped fluff everywhere. Nailed it… They are all attached to pipe cleaners which apparently we call chenille sticks these days.
And so to the final piece. It fitted into the car nicely for delivery without having to take off a wheel, and will be installed on the street in a day or so.
