Pirate Quilt

The next nephew quilt was for a 4 year old obsessed with Pirates.  Hmmm, perhaps that’s a hint for the quilt design…  The front is a square in square design.  I found a pirate fabric with squares of pirate pictures, which I cut up to be the centre of the squares.  Other square centres are from an Eric Carle fabric with aquatic animals and birds on them.

I don’t normally use sashings, but love the white contrast this gives the blues.  This was a last minute design change as I had planned, and even cut all the sashings in low value matching fabrics.  But when I pieced together a few blocks there was not enough contrast and it looked messy.  Cue a rescue by white.

He loved the pirates, but even more than that, he loves the allover pirate fabric on the back.  So the quilt is upside down on his bed…  I’m beginning to think my quilt backs are more popular than the fronts, and what message should I take from that do you think?

Here is the quilt on the bed, AFTER I insisted on turning it over to show all my hard work.

And here he is wrapped in the famous backing fabric.  Which, I might add, was brilliantly chosen by his teenage cousin in a last minute dash for a backing whilst on holidays.  Not that I was running late in getting these quilts finished, really :).  And although I wouldn’t have picked it as it’s  teeny weeny bit kiddy for my tastes, he knew it had 4 year old boy written all over it.

And it does!
